The McIntosh family are dad Vin, mum Nicola, nine year-old Harvey and seven year-old Hannah. They bought their house as a do-er upper seven years ago, planning to transform it into the perfect family home, with a new extension, new kitchen and bathroom and new carpets and décor throughout. But a change in financial circumstances cut their budget in half and put paid to their extension plans. Dad Vin did his best but is a self-confessed DIY dud, leaving the kitchen with doors hanging off and wonky kickboards. Nicola’s decision to save money by not tiling the whole bathroom has led to peeling paint and damp walls. And no sooner had the carpets gone down than Harvey was rushed to hospital with serious breathing problems, which were eventually diagnosed as a severe dust mite allergy. Carpets, curtains and soft furnishings all had to be ripped out and replaced to keep dust to a minimum.
Alison and Ed are tasked with creating an awesome but allergen-free bedroom for Harvey. But with no furnishings or fabrics allowed, they’re facing their biggest décor dilemma yet. Meanwhile John and builder Martin Gonzalez need to fix and finish some of Vin’s bodges and they’re determined to turn him from DIY zero to DIY hero in the process.
